DISAPPOINTING JANUARY FOR NEW CAR SALES BUT SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN EMISSIONS
The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), recently released the Motor Industry Review Update 2020 and the official 201 new vehicle registration figures for January.
Overall new car registrations for January are down by 3.5% from 32,370 to 31,251 in 2020. However, Light Commercial Vehicles are up by 2.1% from 5,548 last year to 5,666 and Heavy Goods Vehicle registrations are showing an increase by 8.8% From 354 to 385 in 2020.
Used car imports saw a decline in January by 26.4% to only 6,623 when compared with January 2019 9,003.
Despite the decline in new car registrations, one of the most important stats that must be clearly notes is the reduction in CO2 emissions. The average CO2 emission has dropped by 5.8%
Diesel continues to remain the most popular engine type at 42.1%, followed closely by petrol at 39.6%, hybrid receiving 13.6%, which has gained a significant increase, along with electric engines at 2.9% and plug-in hybrid receiving the lowest, 1.8%.
